Devastated by a 10-year war with the Soviet Union, the repressive rule of the Taliban and most recently, U.S. attacks on the country, Afghanistan is in many ways a society starting from scratch. Now the fledgling democracy is struggling to rebuild the key institutions of a free society, including an independent media. Photojournalist Reza, an Iranian, has traveled in the troubled country since 1983--the same year that he first began to teach photography to Afghans. In 2001, he founded Aïna, which promotes journalism and cultural expression. The nonprofit group employs 250 Afghans who are working to document the rapid changes in their society through various media.
